What did Google announce with its new 'Polar Peaks' AI Quest?

Google Research and the Stanford Accelerator for Learning launched 'Polar Peaks,' the third installment in their AI Quests series. It has students ages 11 to 14 act as researchers mapping neurons to investigate a character's memory loss, practicing data cleaning and model testing while learning about AI oversight. Google also released new teacher training modules.

ประเด็นสำคัญ

  • Google Research and the Stanford Accelerator for Learning launched 'Polar Peaks,' the third quest in their AI Quests series, aimed at teaching AI literacy to students ages 11 to 14.
  • Google says more than 400,000 AI Quests have been completed to date, localized into 10 languages.
  • In Polar Peaks, students act as researchers who scan and map neurons to investigate a game character's memory loss, completing tasks such as data cleaning and model testing.
  • Google says the quest draws on more than a decade of its connectomics research, including its recent mapping of the complete fruit fly brain, which it describes as the largest brain map by neuron count to date.
  • Google is rolling out new teacher training modules through its Google AI Educator Series, with modules for the first two quests available now and one for Polar Peaks expected next month.

A third quest, this time on the brain

Google Research and the Stanford Accelerator for Learning have launched "Polar Peaks," the third installment in their AI Quests series, the company said in a blog post. The program is designed for students ages 11 to 14 and asks them to take on the role of Google researchers tackling real-world problems using AI.

According to Google, more than 400,000 AI Quests have been completed to date, localized into 10 languages. The first two quests in the series focused on flood forecasting and eye disease detection, which Google says were inspired by its Flood Forecasting initiative and its AI model for diabetic retinopathy screening.

What happens in Polar Peaks

In the new quest, Google says students travel to "the frontiers of neuroscience" to see how AI can speed up scientific research. With the guidance of in-game mentors, students scan and map neurons in the brain to help understand a game character's memory loss. Along the way, Google says they complete tasks such as data cleaning and model testing, which the company says is meant to teach them that AI requires careful human oversight and critical thinking.

Google says the quest is inspired by more than a decade of its research in connectomics, the science of mapping neural networks in the brain. After finishing the quest, students hear from two researchers involved in what Google describes as real-world breakthroughs in the field, including the company's recent mapping of the complete fruit fly brain, which Google calls the largest brain map by number of neurons to date.

Training modules for teachers

Alongside the new quest, Google is releasing training modules for teachers through its Google AI Educator Series. Google says these modules are meant to help educators reinforce AI literacy concepts and incorporate AI Quests into classroom discussion and curriculum. The company says modules for the first two quests are already available, with a training module for Polar Peaks set to follow next month.

Google also noted that AI Quests won a 2026 Webby Award for AI Education, Learning & Training, as well as Best Global K-12 Learning Solution at the ETIH Innovation Awards, earlier this year. The company said it plans to continue working with educators and partners to bring more quests to classrooms this school year.
