Anthropic announced Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, or EFS, a system that combines zero data retention with automated monitoring intended to detect serious misuse of its AI models. The company said EFS stores activity data in cloud infrastructure controlled by customers rather than Anthropic.
EFS will begin rolling out in phases later this fall, with Anthropic aiming for broad availability during the same period. Eligible customers will receive zero data retention on Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 until EFS is available to them.
Anthropic said it developed the system with more than 100 customers across financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, law, retail and the public sector. Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure also participated as cloud partners. The company said its discussions covered a quarter of the Fortune 100, every U.S. global systemically important bank and virtually every regulated industry.
Customer-controlled storage and review
Customers can store monitoring activity in their own cloud accounts, including Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage or Google Cloud Storage. Anthropic said the data can remain under each customer’s encryption keys, access policies and audit logging.
EFS uses automated systems to analyze a rolling window of traffic. According to Anthropic, those systems look for signals of serious misuse, including attempts to develop offensive cyber or biological capabilities and indications that credentials have been stolen or leaked. When monitoring detects a pattern requiring attention, the signal goes directly to the customer.
Customers decide how flagged data is reviewed, and their own personnel handle any human assessment. Anthropic said no human review by its employees is required.
Anthropic presented the architecture as a response to customers that wanted monitoring across multiple sessions and accounts but could not use models subject to data retention requirements. The company said it had introduced 30-day retention with Fable 5 because some misuse can span several tasks, sessions and accounts. It also said it has never trained on enterprise data without explicit permission and will not do so.
Availability and cost
Anthropic said EFS will work with Claude Code, Claude Enterprise, the Claude Platform, Amazon Bedrock, Claude Platform on AWS, Google’s Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry. Customers accessing Claude directly or through AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure will receive equivalent controls, with activity data stored in their own cloud accounts. Anthropic is also working to support third-party offerings serving customers eligible for EFS.
Customer-owned storage, Customer-Managed Encryption Keys and fully automated review are separate opt-in controls. Anthropic said enabling them does not alter model behavior, API pricing or rate limits.
