Anthropic selects Google Cloud to support Claude development

Anthropic selected Google Cloud as its cloud provider in a partnership intended to support the development and deployment of the AI company’s systems, Anthropic announced on Feb. 3, 2023.

Under the arrangement, Anthropic and Google Cloud plan to co-develop AI computing systems. Anthropic said it will use Google Cloud’s GPU and TPU clusters to train, scale and deploy its AI systems.

The company linked the cloud agreement to plans to make its AI systems available to more people. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said Google Cloud would provide the infrastructure performance and scale needed for that expansion.

Infrastructure for AI development

The announcement identifies Google Cloud as Anthropic’s chosen cloud provider and describes joint development of AI computing systems as part of the partnership. It does not provide financial terms, infrastructure capacity figures or a schedule for the work.

Anthropic said Google Cloud’s computing infrastructure would be used across several stages of its work. Those uses include training AI systems, scaling them and deploying them. The announcement specifically names both GPU and TPU clusters as resources Anthropic plans to use.

Amodei also said Anthropic was eager to use the infrastructure to build AI systems that are reliable, interpretable and steerable. According to Anthropic, the partnership will help it build a more robust AI platform.

Claude and Anthropic’s safety research

Anthropic described itself as an AI safety and research company. It said its work is focused on developing and deploying Claude, an AI assistant based on the company’s research into building safe and steerable AI.

The company also identified Constitutional AI as one of the safety techniques it has created. Anthropic said its safety work is intended to produce AI technologies that are easier to rely on and understand.

The announcement connects that research and product work with the computing resources covered by the Google Cloud partnership. Anthropic said the cloud infrastructure would support the next phase of the company as it deploys its systems to a larger group of people.

The company did not announce a new Claude model, product price or release date as part of the partnership notice. Its stated focus was the selection of Google Cloud, access to GPU and TPU clusters, planned co-development of AI computing systems, and infrastructure for training, scaling and deploying Anthropic’s AI systems.
