Anthropic and CodePath put Claude at center of coding curriculum

Anthropic announced a partnership with CodePath to redesign the education provider’s coding curriculum around Claude as AI changes software development. CodePath will place Claude and Claude Code at the center of its courses and career programs, providing access to more than 20,000 students at community colleges, state schools and historically Black colleges and universities.

CodePath describes itself as the largest provider of collegiate computer science education in the United States. More than 40% of its students come from families earning less than $50,000 annually. The organization aims to give those students industry-vetted courses and access to career networks that have traditionally been available to students at wealthier institutions.

Claude in CodePath courses

CodePath is adding Claude to Foundations of AI Engineering, Applications of AI Engineering and AI Open-Source Capstone. According to Anthropic, students will learn to build with tools such as Claude Code and contribute to open-source projects.

The integration follows a pilot involving more than 100 CodePath students in fall 2025. Participants used Claude Code while contributing to open-source projects including GitLab, Puter and Dokploy. Anthropic said students described the work as valuable and challenging.

Laney Hood, a CodePath student and computer science major at Texas Tech University, said Claude Code supported her learning when she entered a project with little experience in programming languages used by its repository, including TypeScript and Node.js.

Howard University announced a redesigned Intro to Artificial Intelligence course in January, developed with CodePath and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The course gives students experience with Claude-assisted software development. Anthropic said it is the first CodePath applied AI curriculum offered for academic credit at a university.

Michael Ellison, CodePath’s co-founder and chief executive, said the partnership would allow students at historically overlooked institutions to learn with Claude from the beginning of their studies.

Research on coding education

Outside the classroom, Anthropic and CodePath plan to conduct public research into how AI is changing coding education and the dynamics of economic opportunity. They intend to share findings gathered from students, educators and industry leaders about approaches that are and are not working as people develop technical skills and enter the workforce.

Anthropic presented the partnership as part of its existing education work. The company said it is partnering with the American Federation of Teachers to provide free AI training to the union’s 1.8 million members in the United States.

Anthropic also cited an education pilot with Iceland’s Ministry of Education and Children that gives teachers access to Claude, as well as work with Rwanda’s government and ALX on a Claude-powered learning companion for students and young professionals across Africa. The company has also signed the White House’s “Pledge to America’s Youth: Investing in AI Education,” committing to expand AI education through cybersecurity education, the Presidential AI Challenge and a free AI curriculum for educators.
