Mistral has raised €3 billion in a Series D funding round led by Samsung Electronics, the company announced. The financing gives Mistral a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion.

Mistral described the transaction as the largest equity fundraising round completed by a European technology company. The announcement comes three years after the company’s launch.

Scaleup Europe Fund, which is managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity joined Samsung Electronics as co-leads.

Research, computing and expansion

Mistral said the funding will significantly expand its frontier research, which underpins the company’s infrastructure, products and work on sovereignty. It also plans to increase the computing capacity used to train its models and expand its infrastructure.

The company said the round will accelerate its commercial growth and international footprint. Mistral currently operates across 20 countries and says it supports more than 125 global enterprises with mission-critical AI work. It named Airbus, ASML and HSBC among those enterprises.

Mistral presents its technology as a full stack spanning open-weight models, computing capacity, infrastructure and products used to put AI systems into production. The company says this approach gives customers control over their data, models, computing resources and deployed systems.

According to Mistral, its open approach allows organizations to build AI systems without exposing their data, workflows or institutional knowledge outside their own boundaries. It defines sovereign AI through four areas: data kept within an organization, controllable and customizable models, private and predictable computing, and production systems that can be controlled and audited.

Participating investors

Mistral said the Series D brought together strategic and financial investors from Europe, Asia and North America. Samsung Electronics’ leadership of the round follows Mistral’s Series C, which was led by ASML.

Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg joined as new investors.

Existing investors participating in the round included a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Phoenix Court’s Solar fund and Salesforce Ventures. Mistral identified LocalGlobe, Latitude and Solar as part of Phoenix Court’s Solar fund.

The company said the funding will support its effort to provide organizations and governments with AI infrastructure that they can control and customize. Mistral also said its stack is designed to avoid reliance on a single vendor’s roadmap, pricing or availability.
